TOTO S550e Washlet vs Brondell Swash 1400 | High Level Comparison

The TOTO S550e and the Brondell Swash 1400 are two of the most popular bidet seats on the market, and for good reason - these seats are both loaded with features consumers expect in a high end bidet.  They are each equipped with tankless water heating for continuous on-demand warm water.  In addition to the adjustable water temperature, water pressure and nozzle position, these models also share features like two user presets, oscillating wash, heated seat, warm air dryer, and a night light that illuminates the interior of the bowl with a soft blue light.

There are a few differences to keep in mind when choosing which bidet is best for you.  One difference is the e-water misting feature found on the S550e.  This sprays a mist of water in the toilet to keep the surface of the bowl clean and more sanitary.  While the Swash 1400 does not have the e-water misting feature, it does have stainless steel wash nozzles whereas the S550e has a plastic wash nozzle.  In terms of washing, the S550e has an additional water pulse feature for a massage-like pulsating spray.  The Swash 1400 offers an Auto feature to cycle through a wash followed immediately by an air dry with a single button.

Another key difference is the automatic opening and closing lid feature included on the TOTO S550e.  The Brondell Swash 1400 seat and lid must be raised and lowered manually, although it does have a soft-closing seat and lid so they go down gently rather than slamming.  Speaking of the lid, the Swash 1400 is unique in that it has a lid you can sit on unlike the S550e and most other bidets.  The spray volume, which is a measure of the water output during the wash, is slightly larger on the Swash 1400 (0.5 liters per minute) than the S550e (0.4 liters per minute).  Aesthetically, the TOTO S550e has two options to choose from for the lid design rather than just one standard version and has a slightly slimmer body.

TOTO S550e Washlet

The TOTO S550e is the top-of-the-line bidet seat from the pioneer of electronic bidet seats.  The redesigned body is slimmer than other bidet seats and is offered with two different styles with the Modern and Classic lid options.  In addition to the adjustable wash features and extra non-wash features like warm air dryer and night light, the S550e is popularly known for its automatic opening and closing lid for a hands-free experience.  TOTO also includes its eWater technology in the S550e which mists the surface of the toilet bowl before and after every use to lessen the need and frequency for manual cleaning of the bowl.

Compelling reasons to choose the TOTO S550e:

     - You want to have the automatic opening and closing lid feature

     - You like the benefits of the eWater bowl misting function

     - It's a thinner profile bidet seat

Brondell Swash 1400

The Swash 1400 is the latest model in Brondell's popular Swash series of bidet seats with several updates from the previous generation including two user presets, a night light, deodorizer with replaceable cartridges for continued efficiency over the life of the unit, and an Auto feature that goes through a wash cycle followed immediately by the air dry cycle with the press of a single button.  The Swash 1400 is equipped with dual stainless steel nozzles, so there is a single dedicated nozzle for the posterior wash and one dedicated for feminine wash.  It has a spray volume of 0.5 liters per minute as well as a weight-bearing lid you can sit on.

Compelling reasons to choose the Brondell Swash 1400:

     - You want a lid you can sit on

     - You have a round size toilet (the S550e only comes in elongated)

     - The longer warranty and lower price appeal to you

Design

Here are some differences in design specs.  These are bidetsPLUS' measurements of the physical unit; may differ slightly from stated measurements in the owner's manual, perhaps due to conversion from metric units to imperial.

Height - Front (shortest point)  1.5" 1.2"

Electric Cord Extends from (facing the unit) Left Left
Electric Cord Length  42.0" 42.0"

Key takeways:  The TOTO S550e has the narrowest profile and is half an inch shorter than the Swash 1400, giving the S550e a bit of a slimmer appearance.  The Brondell Swash 1400 is shorter in length and actually requires less space between the toilet tank and mounting holes than the usual 1.75" needed, so the Swash 1400 can fit some more compact toilets that the S550e would not (see fitting chart).  Also note the S550e is available in the Elongated size only, so if you have a round size toilet you would want to choose the Swash 1400 round size option.

Wash Features

These two bidet seats share many wash features: instant tankless water heating with adjustable water temperature, adjustable water pressure, adjustable nozzle position and oscillating wash.  Both have posterior and feminine wash, however the Swash 1400 uses separate stainless steel nozzles for each while the TOTO S550e uses a single plastic nozzle.  The Brondell Swash 1400 also has a width adjustment feature that allows you to adjust how wide the wash spray is for both posterior and feminine wash with three different width settings.  The TOTO S550e has something similar with its regular rear cleanse and a soft rear cleanse as well as a regular front cleanse and a wide front cleanse.  These features are fairly similar allowing you to adjust between a gentler wide spray or a sharper narrow spray, the main difference being that the Swash 1400 has three settings and the S550e has two settings.

Both models have two user presets so two different users can save their preferred water temperature, water pressure, and nozzle position settings.  The S550e has a pulsating wash feature not available on the Swash 1400.  The pulsating wash feature sprays the wash stream in a pulsing manner like a strobe light and is designed to have a massaging effect.  The Swash 1400 has an Auto wash feature that initiates the wash cycle followed immediately by an air dry cycle so the user only needs to press one button for those who may be looking for the simplest operation possible.  The Swash 1400 has a slightly larger spray volume of 0.5 liters per minute whereas the S550e has a spray volume of 0.4 liters per minute.

Other Features

Non-wash features found on both models include the warm air dryer with adjustable temperature, adjustable temperature heated seat, night light, and air deodorizer.  The air deodorizer on the Swash 1400 has replaceable cartridges so that the deodorizing function doesn't diminish over time.  Another big difference with the Swash 1400 is the fact that you can sit on the lid.  Most bidet seat lids are not designed to be weight bearing making the Swash 1400 unique in that regard.

The two main features that differentiate the S550e are the automatic opening and closing seat and the e-water.  The S550e uses a body sensor on the unit that recognizes when someone approaches and automatically raises the lid.  When you are finished using the bidet and have left the vicinity of the seat, the lid automatically lowers itself.  The seat can also be raised and lowered using a button on the remote control.  The e-water features uses electrolyzed water (commonly used for washing dishes in restaurants) to mist the toilet bowl before and after each use and every 8 hours during non-use in order to keep the surface clean and prevent material from accumulating on the bowl.
